Nepali English or Other Varieties of English: Perspectives from English Language Teachers in Nepal

This qualitative content analysis article aims at exploring the perspectives of English language teachers on Nepali (NE). I purposively selected six college level from Sunsari and Morang districts collected required data through a semi-structured interview. The study reveals that NE has emerged in Nepal as result mother tongue influence, nativization to local contexts, exposure non-native during second acquisition process, it is practically more appropriate than other varieties Nepal. All research participants favour intelligible easier teach learn English, promotes identity, boosts confidence, reduces anxiety, helps resist hegemony British (BE) or American (AE). They, however, believe discourse NE, its codifi cation standardization, power (political, economic, ideological) are necessary for bringing into concrete form. These pave ground appropriating policies, curriculum, textbooks, pedagogy Nepal, rethinking traditional treatment errors.
